From Rock Bottom to Resilience: A Story of a Man Who Refused to Give Up
Born into a Christian family, Calvin's early years were defined by hardship, pain, and survival. With an abusive father who offered little support, and a mother who struggled as a home-based seamstress to make ends meet, Calvin's childhood was filled with emotional and physical turmoil. School provided no refuge he faced constant bullying and isolation, which further chipped away at his self-worth and confidence.
In search of belonging and power, Calvin turned to the streets. He joined a gang, believing he had finally found a place to call home. But what began as a desperate attempt to escape his pain led to an arrest for rioting with deadly weapons, a charge that carried a possible sentence of up to seven years in prison. That moment became his wake-up call.
Determined to turn his life around, Calvin left school and began working multiple part-time jobs. Without a diploma, he entered the world of sales, one of the few professions that offered a chance at success without formal qualifications. He flourished for the first 11 years. But the decade that followed left him feeling aimless until he found renewed purpose in the financial industry. Earning a five-figure monthly salary again, Calvin believed he had finally made it.
Then came September 2008 - the global financial crisis. Overnight, everything crumbled. A high-profile opportunity vanished, savings were wiped out, debts piled up, and countless job applications led only to rejection. Depression set in, and suicide seemed like the only way out.
But just as he was preparing to end it all, Calvin received an unexpected job offer from a Christian organization as a Cleaning & Training Supervisor. From five-figure monthly incomes to three-figure take-home pay, the role was humbling and healing. More importantly, it brought hope.
That hope turned into recovery. In time, better opportunities came. Calvin eventually returned to the same organization that had saved his life, serving there for eight more years before launching his own speaking, coaching and training venture: SOW International Pte Ltd.
Today, Calvin is a speaker, coach, and trainer who uses his voice to inspire. His journey is one of resilience, redemption, and unwavering faith in God - a God who was with him every step of the way, even when Calvin wasn't always walking with Him.
